Coondoo Classic 2021

Students participating in the Coondoo Classic

On Thursday 3 June, 49 competitors participated in the 2021 South Coast Public Schools Mountain Bike Championships at Currambene State Forest (Coondoo). During the 2019 bushfires, the Coondoo track was completely burnt out.  Thanks to South Coast United Mountain Bikers (SCUM) volunteers, the trails were re-built and are now as good as ever. With the Coondoo Classic being cancelled during 2020 due to Covid restrictions, riders were super keen to get out there once more. 335 riders from 13 different schools were race ready and Ulladulla High School riders didn’t disappoint. During the first lap of the day, the rain started and didn’t stop for the rest of the race! The conditions were incredibly difficult, with some riders coming off and bikes heavily caked in thick mud

UHS made the podium in 3 of the 9 categories. The Ninjas (Lachie Barry, Zara Neil, Harry Walsh and Seb Diver) finished second in the Junior Mixed category, the Radical Raptors (Lulu Harvey, Zoe Adcock, Sophie Holleley and Lauren Harper) also finished second in the Intermediate Female division and The Squad (Brock Williamson, Waineisha Matthews Maling, Corey Smithers and Richard Howell) finished in FIRST PLACE in the Intermediate Mixed category.

Special mention goes to The Red Rockets (Sam Doyle, Riley Bowman, Cody Martin and Taj Wirth) and The Scrubbers (Sonny Pirrello, Ryan Farr, Thomas McInnes and injured teammate Tasman Armati) who came 4th in the hotly contested Intermediate and Junior Male categories.

Although the conditions were incredibly tough, UHS students displayed exemplary behaviour and positive attitudes all day. A big Thank You to parents and teachers (Mr Armati, Ms Jauncey, Ice) for transporting bikes and supporting the riders on the day.  It was a pleasure to spend the day with such great students.
