Clean Up UHS

Students assisting in clean up

On Friday 14 March it was a hive of activity as students took on the job of cleaning up UHS for Clean up Australia Day. We had all of Year 8 session 1 and then one Year 7 class session 2. The Year 12 leaders who contributed were: Chloe Jeffers, Charlotte Aynsley, Joe Nelson, Ella Dowling-Church and Jordan Magi. There were also Year 8 leaders from the SRC who made a valuable contribution to the day.

Rubbish collected

Session 2 was used for sorting of rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable and then placed in the appropriate bins. During sorting, rubbish was ranked from most found to least found. Ranked types of rubbish picked up: 1. Soft plastics (clingwrap, chip packets, cheese & crackers packets, 2. Plastic bottles, cans, poppers (10c return and earn) 3. Aerosols 4. Hard plastic 5. Glass 6. Skincare containers, single use coffee cups, bottle tops, Soy sauce fishies, old pens and markers (BRAD box recyclable) 7. Aluminium foil. Some ideas that the Year 12 SRC members have noted for further improvement at the school: need for general recycling in the school (not just paper), more education about BRAD box and 10c return & earn bins, need for compost (maybe in food tech rooms, AG plot) and contact Department of Education about recycling systems in schools. Well done to all involved.
