Our events
The SEC annually runs many popular events, such as Back2Basics Day, Year 7 Environment Day and Clean Up Australia Day. These events have extremely high participation rates by both staff and students. The SEC has also actively participated in numerous community events including beach watch, Clean energy for Eternity, Clean Beach Competition to name a few. The SEC has also represented Ulladulla high school at the New South Wales Junior Landcare Conference where we delivered workshops to students from all over NSW.
Back2Basic Day
Back2Basics Day is the SEC's main annual event. The focus of the day is to raise awareness about global warming, and to show that if we work together we can reduce our electricity usage dramatically. Back2Basic Day is a good example of how a simple idea can gain momentum and evolve into something that brings the whole community together. The idea came from a discussion about earth hour and how the students believed that they could do one better. Go without electricity for an entire day. Students lead the school in this initiative and do all the work to make it happen. This event shows every person - students, teachers and parents how a school like ours can reduce power consumption and help to cut down fossil fuel emissions. Lessons are run without lights, computers and other everyday technologies.
We believe that now is the time to minimise the power and maximise the future.
Back2Basics Day is held on the first Friday in December each year and in 2010 Back2Basics went NSW statewide, the SEC involved 40 schools from around NSW and from gained interest from Peter Garrett, Joanna Gash, Shelley Hancock, Michael Coutts-Trotter (Director General Education and Training) Integral Energy, Shoalhaven mayor Paul Green and Counselor Mandy Findley attended and assisted the SEC in the proceedings.
Year 7 Environment Day
Each year Ulladulla High's SEC hold its annual Year 7 Environment Day in accordance with World Environment Day. It involves all UHS Year 7 students, giving all students the chance to get up close and learn about native Australian animals and their environment, learn about the concepts of sustainability through games and activities, practice the traditional bushcraft, indigenous sports and jewellery making. The students of UHS benefit greatly from the day through both an environmental and educational aspect.
Leadership day
Each year the SEC also organisers a Leadership day in accordance with the Student Representative Council (SRC) to train and educate our young leaders, enhance leadership skills and encourage taking on the responsibilities of leadership. We believe that it is essential to build and encourage our students skills if we wish to have a productive and inclusive team. The day is held off school grounds and in 2010 special guests were invited to speak and provide input, and we would also like to thank Circus 35 Degrees South for providing the SEC/SRC with a great location, free of charge for the day.
Clean up Australia Day
Each year the SEC runs a program to clean up rubbish along with 'Clean up Australia Day' so that all students of UHS have an opportunity to participate in this fantastic nation wide event. Each year we get great participation rates with about one thousand four hundred keen students cleaning up our school and making the connections between our school environment and the wider community.
