Year 8 Narrawallee Eco Excursion

Students Stand Up Paddle Boarding

During week 6,  UHS Year 8 students had the amazing opportunity to explore the physical and biological aspects of one of the most stunning locations around our local area; Narrawallee Inlet Reserve. In groups of 10-15, Year 8 students participated in four activities aimed to challenge their physical and investigative skills as part of the Year 8 Science Topic: Plants.

Students exploring through microscopes

The students explored Narrawallee Beach with various beach games including beach cricket, sandcastle building, touch football, and a variation of Mr Woods’ famous Big Ball Cherry. They then participated in a scavenger hunt around the reserve, and were tasked with finding a number of unique heath land plant adaptations from the banksia, bangalay, swamp mahogany swamp she-oak, yellow bush pea, and many more. In the estuarine part of Narrawallee Inlet Reserve students, under the instruction of Steve from the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre, learned about the unique and fascinating adaptations of the Grey Mangrove. Its ability to withstand the relentless tidal interchange and high salinity levels is remarkable.

Their learning continued with some hands-on sampling of the estuarine fauna. Students used nets, nipper pumps, and fishing equipment to observe soldier crabs, nippers, and a variety of fish species that call the inlet home. The most exciting activity of the day was a stand-up paddle board through the inlet itself. This activity was facilitated by Ms Tabone, Ms Ford, and Mrs Mergel as water safety. For many students, this was their first time on a SUP! The level of determination and resilience displayed by UHS students during this activity was remarkable, as (due to the tidal nature of the Inlet) there was some current to contend with on the return journey to the lagoon. The students also displayed teamwork and communication during their beautiful SUP session. It was a very busy day for the students, but equally as rewarding!
