We make the road by walking

Dancers performing on stage

Recently I have been reading a book by Myles Horton and Paulo Freire, called We Make the Road by Walking. Essentially it is a conversation between two great educator- activists from different continents who honour learning, as a common dream of human liberation, hope, guidance, and humility. You may ask, what has that got to do with UHS.  Throughout 2023, our purpose and hope has been to help ordinary everyday students to learn to take control over their own learning destiny, work toward being great humans, understand democracy, and believe in a just and fair society. Education indeed is the greatest gift you can give a young person, so that they have agency over their learning journey and therefore agency over their life. With that, I encourage all parents and carers to open up the conversation over the break about learning, education and our collective struggle for a generous, caring and just society. Congratulations on your growth, and the memorable journeys over 2023. We acknowledge the efforts, the setbacks, the highs and the lows, and we understand we are all a year older, a little wiser and certainly a little richer inside our hearts. For the 1350 of us, who come to our school every day, adults, and students alike, pat yourselves on the back, you have grown, and know, you are not the person you were a year ago. #CelebratetheMoment #reflectGrowth
