Ulladulla High Students Get a First Look at Albatross Base

Students at HMAS Albatross Base

On Thursday 26 June, 14 students from Ulladulla High School joined peers from Bomaderry High School for the NAPS First Look program at HMAS Albatross in Nowra. The visit offered students a rare and engaging insight into the operations and career opportunities within the Royal Australian Navy.

The day began with a briefing and tour of 723 Squadron and HATS (Helicopter Aircrew Training System), where students learnt about the advanced training methods used for Navy aircrew. This was followed by a visit to the SSWC (School of Ship Survivability and Safety), highlighting the importance of safety, resilience, and preparedness at sea. Students then toured 816, 725, and 808 Squadrons, gaining a close-up look at the aircraft and technical expertise required to support Navy operations. One interesting novelty during the day was that phones and smartwatches were not allowed in some areas, giving students a chance to disconnect and fully engage with the experience. A highlight of the day was lunch at the Junior Sailors Mess, where students were treated to a delicious Mexican-themed menu—a definite crowd-pleaser! After lunch, students had fun in the mess recreational room, enjoying some friendly competition playing pool, darts, and air hockey.

The visit concluded with a tour of 822X Squadron, providing insight into the Navy’s cutting-edge use of unmanned aerial systems and the evolving role of technology in defence.

The NAPS First Look program was an informative and inspiring experience, showcasing the many exciting pathways within the Australian Defence Force.

If any Year 10 students missed this visit and are interested in attending the next tour, 'Next Step' on Thursday 14 August in Term 3, please see Ms Brooks in the Careers office or email her at julia.brooks@det.nsw.edu.au
