Uncle Benji

In a transformative journey through the heart of Australia, eleven Aboriginal Studies students recently embarked on an immersive exploration of our country's rich cultural heritage. The adventure began at Uluru, where they witnessed the awe-inspiring sunset and delved into the spiritual significance of this iconic landmark.

Next on their itinerary was hiking through Kata Tjuta, marvelling at the domed rock formations that hold deep spiritual meaning for the local Anangu community. The students then ventured to Kings Canyon, where the breathtaking landscapes provided a backdrop for discussions on environmental stewardship and Indigenous land management practices. The highlight of the journey was spending three days on Uncle Benji's country about 2 hours south west of Alice Springs, an experience that took them off the grid and deep into the traditional ways of living. Our students learned firsthand from Uncle Benji about his ancestral ties to the territory, gaining insights into ancient practices, heard stories of local dreaming, and the extensive connections between people and country.

This journey wasn't just about witnessing natural wonders but about fostering a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and heritage. The students returned enriched, carrying with them stories of resilience, wisdom, and a newfound appreciation for the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous knowledge.

We are incredibly grateful to Ms Bunyan, Ms Waser and Erica who led this trip, Department of Education facilitators, our tour guides and to Uncle Benji. We will never forget this amazing opportunity.
