A chess club revival

students playing chess

When my kids were young I taught them to play chess. Not sure if they were into it as much as I was, but they humoured me. I was taught by my teacher; in primary school we had a chess club and it continued into high school.

Today, Chess has been narrowed out by all the technology and online games, particularly phones. However, at UHS Chess is back in a big way, which truly makes me very happy, and this is why. Chess teaches strategy, you must think two moves ahead, instead of focusing only on what the next move of your chess piece will be. Chess teaches patience. They will learn that the lack of patience will most likely cause them to end up in checkmate. Chess improves executive functioning. This is a game when you can share and teach strategies, learn from mistakes and be with each other in a quiet, considered, and thoughtful way. Big thanks to Mrs Peters-Power, coordinating her enthusiastic chess club twice a week at lunch times, last count there were more than 10 games going. #ChessRules #PatienceStrategy
