The tradition of Coolendel

Mrs Smith at Year 7 Coolendel Meeting

This week we are so fortunate, in these COVID Times to provide an outstanding opportunity for our Year 7 students to attend the annual Year 7 camp known fondly as ‘Coolendel’. Last week we met with Year 7 a number of times to organise, prepare and inform all the students about the procedures and the preparation necessary to camp for 4 days. As we stated this is not easy, and there will be challenges in every aspect, physically, emotionally and socially as Year 7 endeavour to navigate their sense of self. I asked all Year 7, if they knew when the first ever UHS Coolendel camp occurred.. someone said 2007. Would you believe the first Coolendel camp was in 1995. The second question, how many of your parents went to Coolendel when they were in Year 7. More than 10 hands went up. I was curious to know, what has changed since those earliest camps. We like to think – not much. Still no mobile phone reception, still the focus is on learning about the environment, focus on building friendships and learning a lot about themselves. Mrs Smith is really excited and looking forward to being mum for 171 kids this week. #Grateful. We look forward to hearing all about the stories from the Coolendel camp 2020. #Great2Go #Learning #alfrescoClassroom
