Students from the school leadership teams, the SRC and SEC, helped to make purple woollen bracelets, hang purple streamers and spread a positive, purple message. Wear It Purple Day is about creating safe and welcoming spaces in schools and public spaces for young people who are transgender, as well as young people who are gay or bisexual.
This year's theme is Stand Up. Stand Out. It invites everyone to Stand Up and Stand Out in support of LGBT+ young people in 2019. This is still an important message because not everyone does feel safe to come out and be who they really are. Students in the SRC and SEC spoke at roll calls about Wear It Purple Day and shared hundreds of purple bracelets so students could show their support. Some classes had discussions about how it can still be really hard to be different, and about how to support a friend who is gay or transgender. One great piece of advice from a Year 8 student was: "just treat everyone the same, and don't focus on one part of their identity as if that's the only important thing or the only interesting thing about the person".
