At UHS we aim to identify the goal posts of excellence in teaching to understand what it is to be successful in teaching and how that impacts on the progress and learning of students. Learning, moving beyond completing the task, showing interest and engagement and ‘passing' the test. Moving learning and understanding, however, means starting with the private world of each student and the semi-private world of peer interactions (25 per cent of the specific concepts and principles students learn are critically dependent on private peer talk or the choice of resources with which students engage). The key is what is going on in each student's mind – because influencing these minds is the point of the lesson and the point of learning. When asked, students are clear that they want concise explanations; they want understanding that students progress at different rates; tasks that connect new with the familiar and a greater independence and autonomy in their classrooms. This year the teachers of Ulladulla High School are committed to developing deep learning, knowing and understanding their impact upon student progress, moving each student forward beyond the projected expectation. We have the passion and perseverance to make this happen. Mark your calendar for Thursday 4th May - EXPO@UHS - where our students present their learning.
