National Science Week Recap 2024

Dr Kneeshaw Co-ordinating the Seismograph Jump

The theme for National Science Week 2024 was Species Survival, more than just Sustainability. Week 4 at UHS was a week packed full of Science activities involving Djamaru and every year group. Locally themed Kahoots on Shoalhaven bird and fish species, endangered animals and lastly who dropped that scat? Year 11 had a Kahoot competition on fish on Wednesday, being won again by the dominating 11DJ2.

On Monday, Year 7 were treated to guest speaker Monica Mudge who introduced a new local initiative, Habitat for Wildlife Show you care about our wildlife by joining and providing some wildlife habitat on your land. https://tinyurl.com/yc28z4d5

Year 8 have been learning about the importance of recycling mobiles by entering the Mobile Muster Competition with either a short video or artwork (photo, sculpture or painting). Entries have to be in by 1 November, good luck.

Year 9 classes have had a super fun time this week with UPS students. They shared experiments with the younger students including, mealworm races, dichotomous keys, beak evolution and microplastics. It’s wonderful seeing our Year 9 students step up, no supervision required, they ran the show. The younger students loved the older student involvement. UHS teachers are training to be AUSMAP microplastic citizen scientists, in preparation for the Data sections of the New Curriculum. Wollongong Council kindly purchased the microplastic kit for us. Year 10 searched for microplastics at the beaches surrounding the harbour on Tuesday.  Year 10 also collected all the rubbish around the beaches. A very enthusiastic team went on to identifying the source of microplastics under our dissection microscopes. Back at UHS, the whole school literally felt the ground shake on Thursday during Djamaru. We will be entering the GeoScience Quake of the Year competition.

And lastly…The Narrawallee Bushcare Excursion had to be postponed for two weeks due to rain on Tuesday, but the students are looking forward to meeting and learning with the Bushcare volunteers soon.  What a week!
