Pasifika Cultural Huihui Welcome

UMU HANGI MUMU

We have almost 36 different language groups across our school, which is very hard to believe, but true. We have so many rich cultural groups nestled within our school, sharing with us an immense cultural diversity, where our students and their families who call our villages of Ulladulla and Milton and all the surrounding villages home.

Parent preparing the foos

Every Friday our Pasifika Huihui Cultural Group Umu of students have been meeting and sharing their culture, so much so, that the students wanted to invite parents and visitors from community to join the students at school to connect and share stories and histories with a celebration of island food and custom. It was with this invite, that we had our first ever umu/hangi/mumu.

The students of the Pasifika Huihui Cultural Group prepared all the food, set up the celebration and welcomed community. The group was supported by our Student Support Officers, Matt and Jodi, our Ochre Team and Deputy Principals, and it was a fabulous night. Biggest thank you to the Pasifika family and friends for sharing their culture with so many of us.

One parent’s reflection on the special event…

Hi Denise, just want to say thank you for allowing tonight to happen. Such a positive step forward for our community to bring our pacifica whanau (family) together. We all spoke to each other tonight about how long it had been since we have had island food, it’s usually only celebrations with family and friends of which most of us have moved away from, to reside in Ulladulla. Very very special, and the families were extremely grateful, chuffed and excited for the future at UHS.
