West Nowra Recycling and Waste Depot

Year 12 students at West Nowra Recycling Centre

Like many communities across Australia, Shoalhaven City Council is facing challenges with the management of solid waste. Changes in policy nationally and internationally are affecting many of these challenges in addition to greater community expectations for the Council to manage waste more sustainably.

West Nowra Recycling Centre

Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science students visited the West Nowra Recycling and Waste Depot as part of their Depth Study on Resource Management. The aim of the excursion was to evaluate the sustainability of a waste management option that they experienced at the waste depot. Students were shown the raw recycled material from household waste and saw first hand how that waste is turned into useable material that is sent to industry to use in new products. A great example is the use of waste textiles that are turned into sturdy tiles for flooring.
