Year 8 Ecology excursion

students at Narrawallee inlet

During the week of the 6th, 7th and 8th of March Year 8 students participated in an Ecology excursion to Narrawallee Inlet. During their Science studies in Year 8 students explore the world of plants and ecology.

During the day the students rotated around four activities:

students in water at Narrawallee inlet

Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Students paddle boarded around Narrawallee inlet. During this experience they swam, navigated the mangroves and viewed local species including Soldier Crabs, Whiting, Bream and Flathead.

Mangrove Foodweb Study - Under the expert leadership of Steve Leake (from the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre) students explored the mangrove ecosystems and learnt about the unique adaptation of the Grey Mangrove, and how they are nursery areas of a number of local species (largely juvenile fish).

Scavenger Hunt - This activity allowed students to explore the local terrestrial vegetation and challenge their problem-solving and teamwork skills to identify and collect samples of local plant species.

Dune Study - Students took a relaxing walk along Narrawallee Beach and examined the change in vegetation species as you move from the foreshore to the bush.

The students were able to challenge and develop physical, social and academic skills throughout this excursion, and had a great day at the same time.
