Writing, boys and connecting the motivations

Males Students

There is a lot of talk about declining literacy and numeracy levels across Australia, and indeed the world, with boys being part of that conversation. However,  COVID-19 being the biggest disruption to education in decades and there were lots of horror predictions. The results shows that in most areas the results were the same as before the pandemic. One thing that has been identified is that generally boys are not doing as well in reading, hence they are not writing. “There is no good reason why boys shouldn’t be performing at the same level as girls,” however, if we think about their motivations, we gain some insight. Boys (and society), generally, need to understand the tremendous rewards from education right through life and with every additional year of learning there is a direct uplift to average income. The message boys need to hear is that school matters. More indirectly, changing the narrative that showing effort in their schoolwork is highly regarded, and seen as cool, not uncool.  Our current school leaders are great examples of boys who value education and learning. #BoysWriting #EffortIsCool
