Engineers Australia

students at Powerhouse Museum

On 7 March 8 girls from UHS travelled to the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, to attend an immersion day for girls interested in Engineering careers, for Years 7 -10. This day was hosted by Engineers Australia in conjunction  with NSW Women’s Week, The students were Sarang O’Neill, Claire Donnelly, Darcy Stewart, Ivy Lawson, Charlotte Macdonell, Maya Jarman, Chloe Jeffers & Chloe Grabia. The day involved a key notes speaker and 6 hands on workshops hosted by six universities, (UNSW, UTS, USYD, UOW, Macq Uni & WSU).  300 girls attended the day, 50 university students and 70 Engineers helped run the workshops and answer questions on university life and what is it like to be an Engineer. The keynote speakers were Jane MacMasters (Chief Engineer, Engineers Australia), Danielle Kirby (Chair, Women in Engineering Sydney) & Hon Sarah Mitchell (Minister for Education). The girls attended 3 workshops during the day.  The first workshop was on sustainable building, where the girls-built model buildings designed to with stand tsunamis and earthquakes. The second workshop they had to design and build a model dam to hold back 10 litres of water. In the final workshop they learnt about being a Mining Engineer and then had to solve a problem in a mine using Virtual Reality head sets. An absolute long, yet awesome day.
