Navigating high school friendships is definitely a challenge. One of the most pivotal years is when students are in Year 8, around the time of turning 14. Over many years of interviewing and talking to students in Years 11 and 12, they say that Year 8 was one of the hardest years when friendships began to change. When asked about why they change many saying that they changed friendship groups to find friends that were really more like them, made them feel better about themselves, or seemed to understand them better. Many saying that they better understood themselves, therefore deciding that some friendships were not good, choosing sometimes to be alone, until they found their ‘tribe’! The Late Sir Ken Robinson, believed that when you find your element (something that really interests you), you soon find a tribe of people who also have the same interests.
