Last Thursday the UHS U15 rugby league team travelled to Bomaderry to compete for the Ben Creagh Shield. The boys were ready and had their eye on the prize from the get go. Game one was against Nowra High, after a fast start we began to force some risky plays and Nowra took the lead midway through the second half. Some slick hands from Jake Mines to Makye Burns running a great line saw Makye steal the lead at the whistle, one of three tries to Makye on the day. Game two would determine if we made the final, it was against Shoalhaven High, coached by UHS alumni and teacher, Wes Ring. It was a fast paced game with the lead changing several times throughout the game. Forwards Thomas Nelson and captain Hayden Brooke set the standard with hard tackles and tough hit ups. Thomas scored with minutes to go to give us the lead, a well deserved try. Unfortunately a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes by the team gave the ball back to Shoalhaven on our line and ex-UHS student Michael Salafia snuck over in the dying seconds to draw the game, meaning we missed out on the final by points differential. In the consolation
final against Nowra, the boys turned up and showed their skills. Cody Lee showed his blistering pace as he raced down the sideline making a spectacular dive to almost score, not to worry, he got a second chance and scored later in the game to secure the win for the team. We finished the day undefeated and more importantly, everyone supported each other and had a great day. Special mention to Makye Burns, Thomas Nelson, Jake Mines, Cody Lee and Hayden Brooke(c) on being selected for the South Coast representative side.
