Year 9 sewing up a ‘Journey’

Year 9 students sewing in class

When do we know learning has happened? Often it isn’t until a learner reflects on the learning that the true deep understanding translates into knowledge. Last week, I visited a Year 9 Textiles class and the students were working on a textiles art piece that represents their concept of 'journey'. Originally, this project was part of the original assessment schedule, however, this changed due to lack of practical time in COVID.

As Ms Grant told me, ‘You wouldn't think that though... the kids are so into their projects regardless of it not being assessed’. In fact, the students have been extraordinary in their effort, engagement, and enthusiasm during class. Many of the students have also been taking parts of their work home and completing to ensure it will be finished in time. It was an absolute pleasure, not only seeing the beautiful work, but also hearing about the ideas and the explanations on what journey means to them. This is reflective of the renewed interest in textiles, as in 2022, we will have Textiles classes from Year 9-12. Outstanding!! Thank you, Year 9 and thank you Ms Grant!
