Year 12 Agriculture/Geography Product Study

Year 12 Geography and Year 12 Agriculture were fortunate enough to spend a day exploring our local area to support their HSC courses: People and Economic Activity and Farm Product Study. For the second year, these Year 12 subject areas have engaged in a cross curricular project on Dairy. Combining classes for this task has encouraged students to consider the depth and complexities of issues that encompass the dairy industry, from what sustainable farming looks like, how technology can be used to reduce the impact on the environment and which factors need to be considered to produce a quality product, milk.
The day commenced with an insightful visit to Cupitt’s Winery, where students learnt about the biochemistry of gardening, viticulture and making beer, followed by an understanding of how the simple product of milk can be churned to make cheese, a classic example of value adding to a product to create a profit. Cupitt’s Winery sources some of its milk from our local Narrawilly Dairy Farm, Milton. During our afternoon visit to the dairy farm, students were privileged to be able to get a private tour of the farm, hear and see what Robert Miller (farm owner) does to care for his cows, from enhancing the soil, growing nutritious pastures, re-vegetation, using water as efficiently as possible for the ultimate outcome, to sustainably produce milk.  Thank you to the staff at Cupitt’s and Robert Miller for their time and insightful information.

Dairy Fun Fact – Did you know, on average, one cow produces approximately 25 litres of milk in one day and in its peak lactation period she can produce up to 60 litres.

Dairy Fun Fact – Did you know, milk can be on the shelf ready to sell to the consumer within 12 hours after being milked from a cow.
