Young Drivers Education Program - a huge win for students

Drivers Ed

The annual Year 11 Young Drivers Ed program was another massive “WIN” for the students of Ulladulla High School this term.Throughout the year, I was lucky enough to work alongside the Milton-Ulladulla Young Drivers Education Committee to observe and partake in the mammoth community partnership which is the Young Drivers Education Program. This program utilises trained community professionals and volunteers such as; Highway Patrol, SES Flood Rescue, Fire and Rescue NSW, Ambulance Paramedics, Shoalhaven Mechanics and driving instructors. It also draws from the personal stories of accident survivors, as they present the facts and post trauma of their life changing experiences that may have been avoided. Along with a full day’s hands on driving experience at Wakefield Park this program incorporates every aspect of road safety, awareness and responsibility into a practical education package that really delivers.

The students stated that the whole experience was one that will stay with them forever. Others stated that they will think about the stories, experiences and workshops whenever they decide to sit behind the wheel of a vehicle. Most loved the hands-on driving experience at Wakefield Park, which demonstrated; suitable following distances, safe braking techniques and controlling under and over steer.

UHS would like to truly thank the tireless work of the Milton-Ulladulla Young Drivers Education Committee and its sponsors, especially; Senior Constable Kieran Bryant who expertly presented on each day, Alan May Holden for loaning several vehicles, IMB, BDN Signs, Rotary, Lions, Apex clubs, Shoalhaven City Council and Wakefield Park for the use of their facilities. This program gives young drivers a meaningful and thought-provoking life experience that will undoubtedly save young lives on our roads.
