Service-learning provides students with opportunities to develop civic engagement skills by working with their community alongside outstanding volunteers and community advocates. The benefits are numerous, including a student’s ability to enhance their group, organisational and interpersonal skills, their communication and empathy for others. They also can gain important experience working with diverse members of their communities. This is an approach that underpins the project work across all year groups.
In Ms Lowe’s class at the end of last term Year 10 were introduced to a number of outstanding community advocates who have volunteered to serve the community through their advocacy around issues that inspire them and what they are ultimately very passionate about. You will know these awesome community members, Monica Mudge from Take 3 for the Sea; Karen Lissa who advocates for youth programs at Dunn Lewis; our Young Eco, Jade Mudge; Lachlan Page who has served countless volunteer hours with the recent Bushfires; Ann Macdonald from Lions and Community Radio, Riley Nolan who volunteers his time to perform to enrich others in culture. The Year 10 students are now embarking on their own projects of service and volunteering after hearing about all the inspiring stories from our guests. We look forward to seeing the outstanding benefits of this project.
