The Indigenous voice of this country is over 65,000 years old. They are the first words spoken on this continent. Languages that passed down lore, culture and knowledge for over a millennia. They are precious to our nation. I am mesmerised by the harmony created by our didge players, every time I hear their humming tones of the bush, the flora and fauna, the laughing Kookaburra and the smoothness of the circular breathing which represents ideas from moons, changing seasons, day and night, growth and country, I am never the same. Our dancers, who recreate eloquently the stories of our elders, both past and present, and build in all our community great hope for a future, that is connected and represents the incredible voice of our Aboriginal students, and student leaders.
You have taught me, that the strength within you is far greater than you know. That connection to culture is deep, truthful and inseparable. That when I, or any person acknowledges country, it is a conversation and respectful, not a script to be read. I have come to understand what "country" means - how this is lived deeply in every person who is welcomed onto Murramarang land. Congratulations to all who were part of our NAIDOC celebrations last week.
