Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Exploring Early Childhood
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.

Year 7-10

We aim to develop in each student the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to understand, value and lead healthy and fulfilling lifestyles.

The PDHPE program is an important element of the overall school curriculum because it promotes quality of life, self-esteem and social well-being. The program is committed to developing movement skills and fitness.

Electives

Electives offered to student's are available in years 7-10 and 11-12.

Year 9-10

Child Studies 

Aims to develop in students the knowledge, understanding and skills to positively influence the wellbeing and development of children in the critical early years in a range of settings and contexts. Students develop knowledge, understanding and skills required to positively influence the growth, development and wellbeing of children while understanding external factors that support the growth, development and wellbeing of children.

 

Outdoor Education 

Develops in each student the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to understand and identify with the surrounding wilderness environments and conduct themselves in a safe manner in the outdoors. Students develop a range of interpersonal skills, self-management, and specialised movement skills to participate safely in a range of outdoor activities and challenges.

 

Physical Activity and Sports Studies 

Aims to enhance students’ capacity to participate effectively in physical activity and sport, leading to improved quality of life for themselves and others. Students engage in a wide range of physical activities in order to develop key understandings about how and why we move and how to enhance quality and enjoyment of movement.

 

Physical Activity and Sports Studies – Surfing 

Develops in each student a capacity to think critically about issues relating to the surf industry. Students will develop knowledge and understanding about the contribution of surfing to individual, community and social wellbeing while developing their own personal skills to surf confidently. 

 

Year 11-12

Exploring Early Childhood

Our society is increasingly recognising children's experiences in the early childhood years as the foundation for future growth, development and learning. This course explores issues within an early childhood context and considers these in relation to the students themselves, their family and the community.

 

Personal Development, Health and Physical Activity 

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn about the range of areas that underpin health and physical activity. With a focus on health of individuals and community as well as the factors that influence movement skills and physical activity levels, students develop their critical thinking skills and develop a deep understanding of the factors that impact on health, sport and physical activity in Australia.

 

Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies 

Students will learn about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and recognise the need to be responsible and informed decision-makers. This course enables students to further develop their understanding of and competence in a range of sport and recreational pursuits. They are encouraged to establish a lifelong commitment to being physically active and to achieving movement potential.

 

Sports Coaching (VET)

This Board Endorsed course can count towards the HSC but does not contribute towards an ATAR. To achieve this credential students are required to demonstrate competencies across a variety of units including First Aid, Work safety, Work in a community coaching role, Coaching, An effective volunteer, Responding to emergency situations and Maintaining sport, fitness and recreation facilities. Successful students who are interested in the sport coaching industry must be able to demonstrate competencies amongst peers.

 

Sport

Students are encouraged to participate in our annual Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals and experience the supportive and fun culture of Ulladulla High School. Opportunities exist to engage in extra curricula State-wide Knockout Competitions in which the school is involved in 20 different sports. All you need to do is have a go!

South Coast School Sport Trials / Nomination Dates 2024

 
 
Please find below information for experienced and talented individual athletes willing to trial for a place in a South Coast Team to compete at NSWCHS Carnivals in 2024. The South Coast includes all public high schools in an area covering Wollongong to Eden and as far west as Yass. Gaining selection in these sides is very competitive and only those already playing at a representative level are encouraged to nominate to trial. Nomination and Trial dates can be found here
