Year 12

Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) Applications
Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is a simple part of the UAC Application that enables you to receive an Early Offer (November). It is one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission
to Year 12 students. They do this by using criteria other than (or in addition to) the ATAR. SRS applications close 20^th September.

EAS Application

Educational Access Schemes (EAS) aim to help students, whose education has been negatively affected during Year 11 and/or Year 12 (or equivalent), receive an offer to university. There are many categories of disadvantage that students may be eligible to apply
for. All UHS students are encouraged to apply for NO1D (Natural disasters).  If you and/or your parent/s are in receipt of Centrelink you
may be eligible to apply for Financial hardship by giving your
Centrelink CRN. You may also be able to apply for Equity Scholarships.
EAS documentation is due by November 20^th.

Early Bird application closes September 30^th ($70), after this date it will be $200 to make a UAC application. See Mrs Ingold if help needed!

Local companies are looking for apprentices to join their team, in Automotive and Painting & Decorating.

White Card 

The next course will be held early next term. Students should collect an information sheet and pay their money to Student Services ($120). Student assistance is available if required.

Work Experience                                                                              

Many students are taking the opportunity to experience the world of work. Ben Garrett spent the week with Oyster life at Batemans Bay. Charlie Guise and Annalise Hare gained an insight into Primary school teaching at Milton Public School.

Shoalhaven City Council have advertised through hvtc.com.au for next year's apprentice intake. Applications close soon.

A local painting company are seeking a keen apprentice to join their team.

Year 11

The University of Canberra are offering a “Fast Forward” Program for Year 11 students who intend on studying at UC after the HSC. Details can be found at https://www.canberra.edu.au/future-students/apply-now/alternative-entry/fast-forward-program  
UOW offer a similar program, the “University Preparation Program” which will be on offer early next year. SBAT Opportunities A School Based Traineeship/Apprenticeship combines paid work, study and school. Many employers understand the benefits of having an SBAT, and as a result there are several employers seeking students to fill positions. These would ideally suit current Year 10 students, as they are for two years. Opportunities include: Hospitality student working with a busy local catering firm, Retail or Business Services student employed with a local furniture retailer and Business Services student  to work in a local office

Great Opportunities for Students

School-based Apprenticeships/Traineeships are a great career option, allowing young people to commence training for a vocational qualification and earn a wage while completing their senior secondary schooling. This week, Clyde Adams Y10 commenced a TAFE Cert III Engineering (Metal Fabrication) and is working with Steven from Howes That Fabrications. Gus Boland will join the team at Alstain Sheetmetal Ulladulla, from next week. Ruby Frank Y11 commenced a Cert III in Retail with employer, Clyde River Berry Farm. Thank you to these employers for supporting these young people on their career journey!

Year 12

Information is already beginning to arrive in relation to Early Entry Programs at some universities.

The University of Wollongong have released the dates for Early ?Entry applications. They will open on July 20^th (first day of Term 3) and close on Friday 14^th August (Term 3 Week 4). There will be lots of information sessions available to assist students interested in applying for Early Entry at UOW coming up in Term 2.

Students interested in studying at ANU Canberra. You can apply direct to ANU for 2021 and get an early conditional offer. This will allow you to focus on what's really important - completing your final year.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019

What a great group of young people we had graduate from UHS Class of 2019. Many students have gained employment, some are taking a “Gap year”, hoping to travel and explore, and many are continuing with formal education.

Fifty-eight students received 77 offers to attend University (some students received 3 offers or more)! Courses include Medicine, Physiotherapy, Communication and Media, Environmental Science, Primary Education. University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, Charles Sturt University, Australian National University and University of Canberra were just some of the institutions to extend offers.

We look forward to hearing of continued success, as the Class of 2019 become the changemakers of the future!

Year 12 - What Now?

Get Summer work with the F3Style Program    

F3style is a Commonwealth Government funded training and employment program for young people aged 16-21, being delivered by the Dunn and Lewis Youth Development Foundation. The F3Style Hospitality stream is a 6-week program that connects young people with education providers, practical work experience and local businesses. Jobs Don’t Have a Gender

In a move to reduce the gender gap in STEM, The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has announced that from 2020, all women students applying to study Engineering, IT or Construction will receive 10 adjustment points added to their ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).

The decision, which was approved by the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, was made in an attempt to encourage more women to choose to study what have traditionally been male-dominated fields. According to Engineers Australia, women make up only 13% of the engineering workforce.

Year 10 Careers

Year 10 students have been investigating Enterprise/Employability skills for the future. Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy and Problem Solving are some of the skills that will be required and valued, yet many young people demonstrate low proficiency in these areas.

Work Experience

Year 10/11 students have been busy at various workplaces around town recently. Ally England attended work experience at Raine and Horne Ulladulla, Taya Zerbes has been assisting at Naturally Curious Early Learning Centre, Georgia White returned to Tabourie Preschool where she attended when she was a toddler a few years ago now. Sal Gattuso has been a welcome addition at JNC Welding and Brody Hewitt-Hull really enjoyed his week on the tools with Nigel and Tyson Quealey (TNQ Building). Thank you to these businesses for hosting our students.

Mock Interviews

Our Students have been fortunate to have Heather, Emily and Joel visit from Shoalhaven City Council's Human Resources Department.

They guided some of our Year 11 students through a “Mock Interview”, asking them questions that they might be asked when they apply for a job. Our students found it a most valuable experience (even though it was nerve-wracking for some)!

Skills such as shaking hands and introducing yourself, with good eye contact, need to be practiced, as first impressions are very important.

Year 12 Discover the University of Wollongong

In week 2 of Term 1 50 of our students travelled to Wollongong to get a taste of life as a University student.

They participated in workshops in a variety of areas including Education, Physics, Nursing and also completed a campus tour.

With UOW being a popular choice for UHS students, especially their Early Entry programs, it was a great opportunity for students to get an insight into the Wollongong campus.

Work Experience Opportunity at the University of NSW

The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CVEN) in conjunction with its Industry Advisory Committee will be holding a work experience program to promote engineering career options to high school students. The program will be run during Week 5 of Term 2: from Monday 27th May to Friday 31st May, and will be available to Year 10 students across NSW.

The program will allow students to experience engineering projects firsthand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, namely:

• Coastal and Port Infrastructure

• Structures and Design

• Construction and Project Management

• Water, Wastewater and Environment

• Road, Transport and Geotechnical Engineering

• Surveying and Geospatial Engineering

Daily field trips will be led by UNSW CVEN staff supported by engineering professionals to a range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington campus. Students selected for the program will be required to meet daily at 8.50am, at Central Station, with each day of the program finishing at approximately 4pm at UNSW. Students must be available to attend the full five day program. See Mrs Ingold to apply.

The Benefits of Part-Time Jobs for Teenagers

Jobs can help teenagers learn important financial skills and develop a strong work ethic. Some teens may choose to work part time after school or on the weekends while others explore full-time summer employment or odd jobs, such as babysitting or mowing lawns.

UHS students Lily Poll, Matilda Langford and Riley Nolan were finalists in the Milton Ulladulla Business Awards (Trainee of the Year). These students are completing School Based traineeships as part of their study pattern, and were nominated by their employers as being outstanding trainees. Riley is at Budawang School (Education Support), Lily at Milton PS (Education Support) and Matilda is the smiling Customer Service face of ANZ, Ulladulla. Winners were announced at a gala dinner held on Friday night. Well done!

Year 10 subjects for Year 11

Some tips for choosing subjects for Year 11 from the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) is available on the website. 

Year 12

What a busy time for Year 12. Many universities have their Open Days happening soon and this is a good opportunity for prospective students to visit, talk to current students and have any questions answered.

UAC (University Admissions Centre) applications have opened. UAC guides are available to assist students with information or visit the website http://www.uac.edu.au/ or download the app.

Students need their NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA - BOSTES) number and should have received a UAC pin by email. 

In relation to Early Entry, some universities participate in the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and this is part of the UAC application process. Other universities have their own Alternative Entry/ Early Entry programs and students should research about their course of interest.

The University of Wollongong is a popular choice for our students and their Early Entry Scheme is open for applications from 1-25 August. Jade Andrews, a former UHS student now UOW mentor, will conduct an Early Entry workshop for current Year 12 students in the MMC on Wednesday 9 August at 3pm.

Information sessions for students 

UOW Live Chat – choosing a career - It's careers market season and the University of Wollongong knows students have questions about what careers to look at – including what careers are ‘the next big thing'. UOW are holding an online chat live on YouTube, where they will be able to answer these sort of questions. They'll have expert advice from UOW careers office staff on hand, as well as current UOW students. Courses and course information for students 

Online Journalism Diploma - accredited journalism college Jschool is now offering its vocationally-focused Diploma of Journalism via online study. Students are entitled to VET fee-help support for the course, which may be studied over one year full-time, or two or more years part-time.
